On behalf of the Board of the Glenorchy District Football Club - the RSEA Magpies - welcome to 2021. It has been a busy off season at the club with both bar trade and functions returning to normal trading figures towards the end of 2020.
During the break we also welcomed some new talent and returning faces to the club in both the playing and coaching roles, stay tuned for more updates through this newsletter, our Facebook page and our website at glenorchymagpies.org.au.
Off the field we have had some key changes with the retirement of CEO Mark Chivers and, after two solid years at the club, Bar and Functions Manager Matthew Stringer has been headhunted for a role in Queensland. We wish Mark all the best in retirement and Matt well in his new role.
To fill the CEO role we embarked on a search that produced high calibre field of local and interstate applicants. In the end it was very competitive process and we believe the Club has been lucky enough to secure one of the best in the business.
Daryl Potter has been attracted from a successful club and development background in the hospitality sector and starts at Glenorchy today (15 February). See his biography in this edition. Daryl will no doubt become well known by all members.
Even though the Club has not had the opportunity to call the AGM due to the financials not finishing audit yet, a date and time has been pencilled in for 6pm, Tuesday 16 March.
Members can be assured that the list of positives achieved in the COVID-ravaged 2020 season includes membership at a new high, a solid return to trading and a sound year financially with a strong 2019/20 End of Financial Year position, which sees the club well set up 2021.
Bingo is again back to healthy numbers with a great team and loyal players turning up to the club twice a week and very strong interest in our “Super Bingo” at Wrest Point.
On the two occasions it was allowed last year we easily reached the maximum players allowable under COVID restrictions. A big thanks to our volunteers and the team at Federal’s Wrest Point. We are looking forward to setting a few more records this year.

Now is a great time to renew your membership and consider player sponsorship. If you are a business operator, you can look forward to getting some great exposure through the range of club sponsorship packages available.
New sponsors are always welcome with plenty of scope to negotiate the right package. There is also a range of roles in sub-committees (e.g. Bingo, House and Assets, Fundraising) and volunteer tasks for which your time contributions will be gratefully accepted.
Up-coming events which members can get behind are the Club Golf Day on 26 February and the Season Launches which you will be notified of in the near future. Bookings for the Golf Day can be made through the bar or the organising committee. Click here for more details
While the season is not far away the Board and the Football Department are working to get the best outcome for our women’s team as the TSLW was unfortunately wound up by AFLTas at the end of 2020.
While the exact detail of our GDFC Women’s Magpies season ahead is not clear at the time of publishing we are working to get the best result for the girls involved, the Club and the sport itself.
We have been very proud of our talent programme that has been well resourced and a successful part of our “One Club” platform where all players are given the best opportunities we can provide. We will support the team and work towards the best and most equitable outcome possible.
We look forward to seeing you all around KGV as the season gets closer and ask that you get behind the club in 2021.
