The AFL wishes to advise that following a meeting with AFL State CEOs a collective decision has been made to postpone the operation and / or the commencement of each premier State League (including the TSL and TSLW) and state talent program (including the NAB League Boys and Girls competitions).

The decision was collectively agreed upon based on the part-time nature of these competitions and the financial implications for the State League clubs and State Leagues.

This decision is effective until May 31.

The AFL will continue to explore all fixturing alternatives to ensure matches are played, however, acknowledges the situation is fluid and any decision made may change.

The health and safety of our football community – participants, players, coaches, umpires, volunteers and fans are paramount.

The AFL is closely monitoring the situation with respect to COVID-19 and it is important that any information you receive with respect to COVID-19 or any other infectious illness comes from a reputable source. We are regularly consulting with the Australian Government, the World Health Organisation and the AFL’s Chief Medical Officers on the best advice for our football community.

The Glenorchy District Football Club is committing to creating a safe, fair and inclusive sporting and social environment. It seeks to prevent all forms of harassment, discrimination and abuse to promote positive behaviour and values.

New Town/Glenorchy Past Players and Officials Association

100 Centennary Champions
&
Hall of Fame Induction

The New Town and Glenorchy Past Players and Officials Association are holding a very unique event that every past player should make an effort to attend on Friday, 15 November 2019 in the Jack Rough Function Room from 6.30pm.

100 Centenary Champions :
The event will bring together the club's young and old to honour  the respective achievements and contributions set in stone by our past and present players. From the oldest living Past Player who started his football career in 1948 to the modern era of players, will jointly celebrate 100 years of fluctuating seasons.

In excess of 250 nominations have been received from twenty prominent past players, coaches and officials who participated in the nomination process that covered the period 1945 to 2018. Players nominated from the pre 2nd World War era (1919-1941) were selected from club archival profiles and presented as part of the process.

No doubt the final 100 Centenary Champion list will include a few surprises that may cause some conjecture,  however, that’s the norm with these type of concepts.

The final 100 will be presented on the night of the 15th November, with each to receive a framed Centenary Certificate, while their name will be etched on an appropriate honour board for prosperity and unveiled by new Association President, Greg Saunders.

Master of Ceremonies:
Well known Tasmanian actor and entertainer, John X will host the evening and will be joined by his crooning colleagues during the night for a must-see performance!

Hall of Fame:
The induction to the Club’s Hall of Fame for Modern Day Champion, Jay Bowden will be one of the most memorable in recent history…. truly is a special occasion!

Jaye has cemented an incredible record by winning six ‘Banjo’ Patterson Best & Fairest awards. A record that stood for 60 years, jointly held by pre-war great, Eric Hanlon sen. and 1950’s sensation, Neil Conlan of four awards apiece.

Club Stalwart Barry Hassett (pictured with his wife, Sue) was recognised last year as Tasmanian Football's 'Volunteer of the Year” at a gala event at Wrest Point.

The award was hotly contested with many worthy volunteers nominated from leagues and teams throughout Tasmania, but it was 'Our Baz' who was adjudged the winner.

Barry's prize is a very generous 2019 AFL Grand Final package for 2 people provided by AFL Tasmania which he will be enjoying this weekend with his lovely (and very understanding) wife, Sue.  The experience includes 3 days in Melbourne attending many Grand Final events including the traditional Friday parade and premium seats at the big game.

Barry Hassett is an institution at Anfield Street, and many describe him as the 'heart and soul' of the Glenorchy District Football Club.  He has been involved at the club for well over 50 years in many capacities including Director, Team Manager and property steward to name a few.   His commitment and love of the 'Mighty Magpies' is unparalleled and it would be hard to find a more dedicated football volunteer in Australia.

The Club acknowledges this wonderful initiative of AFL Tasmania to recognise and reward volunteers and their families who are the lifeblood of all football clubs.

On behalf of the Club, past and present,  Barry and Sue, thanks for your support, commitment and tireless involvement with the Club. Enjoy this reward and recognition as a  token of the esteem the Football community and the Glenorchy District Football Club hold for your amazing contributions.

 Best Wishes,

John McCann
President
GDFC

In recent months The Executive has been reduced to only five members following the resignation of our most recent President, Barry Connolly.  Barry has accepted an invitation from  Club President, John McCann, to join the GDFC Board while Leon Carr and Ray Careless also decided to commit more of their time in assisting the club on a general basis.

During their time these former members were a valuable part of our Association and we wish them well in their new roles with the Club.

Fortunately, we  had only the last home game functions to conduct which allowed us to operate without any concerns. It also allowed us the opportunity to review our  membership of both former and current members in an endeavour to at least fill the position of President.

Following a recent meeting with a prospective candidate, we are pleased to advise he was only too willing (despite a little arm twisting) to accept the role. It is our pleasure to confirm former player, Greg “Sheepy” Saunders is now our Association President and looks forward to continuing the good work done by his predecessor.

As a former President of Rotary Claremont,  current committee member of Ronald McDonald House and prior to retirement was employed by Australia Post for 45 years which should prove beneficial  for him in his new and exciting role as our President.

WELCOME ABOARD SHEEPY!!!

Thank you to all who entered the GDFC Centennial Raffle.
Congratulations to the following lucky winners:
1st Prize - Kathy Sutton
2nd Prize - Margaret Unwin
3rd Prize - David Brazendale
4th Prize - Greg McDougall

Ben Atkin trophy

Our next Glenorchy 'Legend of the Century' is one of the best midfielders Tasmania has ever produced, Ben 'Bucket' Atkin.

A 1999 premiership star, William Leitch Medalist and 3-time Cazaly Medalist, Ben was also a star for the Tasmanian Devils when they were a force to be reckoned with in the VFL.

Bucket's message to all Glenorchy fans is get to the Centennial Dinner and enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime celebration of 100 years:

"I just can't wait to come along to the dinner and catch up with all the people I was lucky enough to play with and just reminisce," he said.

Jaye v Clarence R3
Our next legend of the century is Jaye Bowden, who last weekend joined Peter Hudson in Glenorchy's exclusive 500-goal club with a six-goal haul against Clarence.

We caught up with Jaye before the game to catch his thoughts about the milestone, his career at KGV and his club's 100-year celebration.
