Season 2016 for GDFC

On behalf of the Board, Members Sponsors and Supporters, I would like to congratulate Senior club Coach Aaron Cornelius and his coaching panel including Michael Styles, Tim Green, Leigh Muir and Nathan Longman and the football department for overseeing the successful completion of the home and away season as minor premiers in the Seniors and Development League (DL). This outcome although not being appropriately acknowledged with a KGV home final, sends a strong message to our September rivals that the GDFC Magpies of 2016 are building to be the best. We acknowledge the commitment of the players and congratulate them on reaching the finals.

Part of this year’s Club success has been the consistent performance of our Development League team under the guidance of Clinton French, Nathan Longman and the DL support staff. Their capability and competitive spirit have provided depth and support for the Senior side.

GDFC is also playing finals in the Under 18’s and the Women’s League. We congratulate Bryan Free and Graham Bennetts (U/18’s) and Jamie and Craig Grace (WL) the respective support staff and the players for such a strong season, which is a great statement about the strength of the Club at the moment and the future.

There will be many chances for supporters to get behind the GDFC teams over the finals including taking out a 2016/17 membership. Purchasing Club merchandise and clothing is a great way to make sure the GDFC Magpie Army is noticed wherever we play. There are also plenty of Club events listed over the next few months that can be viewed on the Club website www:glenorchymagpies.org.au

In an exciting year on field for the Club it is also worth noting our new KGV Club-rooms are now completed and will be officially opened shortly having already hosted the Black and White Ball and 2016 GDFC Past Players dinner. The Board is working closely with the Glenorchy City Council to work through the broad range of matters associated with the finalisation of the development. Congratulations must go to all parties involved. This is the biggest and most complex single project undertaken by the Club. My congratulations to all concerned

We also acknowledge and thank our long time naming rights sponsor Tony McCulloch and his team at GET REAL, major sponsors Cascade Draught, 9/11 and Warren Ross Accounting and our important and hard working volunteers and support staff.

Again best wishes to all our teams in the finals We hope the players, football staff, supporters and families enjoy the finals and get behind the 4 senior GDFC teams representing the Club and help them bring the prizes home. There are several events coming up, so check the website, notices in the Magpie Bar, Facebook and newsletter for details of events in September and October.

The Glenorchy Magpies Foundation has been established to support the important on and off field work of the Club. Our initial project will be the finalisation and enhancement of the new clubrooms, function centre, café, and administration facility at KGV Oval. Our new home will be the most contemporary, largest community sport and recreation facility and precinct in Tasmania.

The finalisation and enhancement of the new facility at KGV will be a significant event in the club’s history, the beginning of an exciting new era for our club. Our new facility will enable us to put the team in the best position to achieve sustained success and to continue to contribute to the community in a meaningful way.

We are aiming to raise $200 000 in two years.

Our fundraising project is run in partnership with the Australian Sports Foundation (ASF).The ASF provides a way for members and supporters to make a fully tax deductible donation in helping to be part of the club's future.

We are calling on all Glenorchy Magpies members and supporters to be a part of this special opportunity. After all, our history is only as good as the people who help make it.

Recently the club was fortunate enough to host a “COACHES SESSION” with former Glenorchy great Adrian Fletcher presenting alongside our current Senior Coach Aaron Cornelius as well as our Strength and Conditioning Coach Sam Yee. It was well attended with 15 coaches present from all levels with every club in our zone invited – Junior and Senior – Claremont and New Norfolk. Adrian these days is the High Performance and Academy Coach for AFL Queensland and has been doing a wonderful job with a number of players being drafted from Queensland in recent times. Prior to that the dynamo mid-fielder has spent time at Geelong (AFL), Collingwood (AFL) and Brisbane Lions (AFL) as an Assistant Coach.
