women premiers gdfc 2021

The Senior Women's season came to a fantastic end with winning the State Premiership on September 19, after a year of challenges.

The season’s last few weeks were full of excitement & expectation, but certainly more emotion, pain & plain hard work than anyone could have imagined.

After crushing arch rival Clarence in the 2nd semifinal, it was a surprise to see the Roos succumb to Claremont in the Prelim final. So the scene was set. A Clash of the Northern suburbs magpies.

The SFL enforced its points rule despite the game being the division 1 Grand Final. Glenorchy was thus forced to play with no interchange players as well as one player short on the ground.

Grand final team selection caused stress & sleepless nights for the coaches, hurt & disappointment for the many girls who were forced to sit & watch. It was a tough lead up to the game for everybody.

Losing young Nakeesha Horton to injury by quarter time made the eventual win even more meritorious. Now playing with two less on the ground, by the last qtr all the girls were clearly tiring, Claremont were starting to surge.

However, led by the unrelenting efforts of all the players, especially experienced Captain Brie Barwick, Tarn Ford, Elise Barwick & Mackie Sutcliffe, they found the will to push on even harder, to record a fantastic victory.

The win made us undefeated for season 2021 SFLW Division 1 Premiers.

As used to be noted in the Monday Mercury, after such efforts, the best players were written as 'all played well'. That they certainly did.

The following Sunday a well celebrated & somewhat sore Glenorchy, this time at full strength, played a well credentialed & likewise undefeated Ulverstone in the first ever Women's Intrastate Grand Final, at North Hobart Oval.

Team Glenorchy's brand of pressure football, an elite game from 16 year old Georgia Clark in the ruck, a great defence, smart forward work & a tireless midfield again ruled supreme.

Congratulations go to Coach Dean Webster, his assistants Cab Devine & Dean King, Manager Rebecca Webster, Support staff & Glenorchy footy club management. Special thanks must go to Mr Everywhere, Peter Barwick.

Thanks also to all the Glenorchy club members, sponsors & followers who gave such great support to the Womens team.

The biggest congratulations however must go to the players. Led by Captain Brie Barwick and Vice Captain Jenna Farrow, they never stopped working, never stopped believing. The rewards are theirs.

So now we rest, enjoy the memory, & wait to see what season 2022 brings.
