Want to know what happened over the pre-season, how the list is looking, who the movers and shakers in the gym and on the track have been, and what the guys are up to now?
We caught up with coach Paul Kennedy to find out all the goss:
👍 WHO'S BACK FROM 2019?
We've had 42 players return from last year's Senior List, which is great, that continuity will be important in what's likely to be a shortened season.
👏 ANY NOTABLE DEPARTURES?
Three long-time servants of the club - Sam Hall, Clinton French and Tim Butterworth - have retired from state-league footy and we thank them for their great contribution over many years, and hopefully they'll get a chance to have a kick at local level this year.
👋 ANY NEW GUYS?
There are 12 new players on our Senior List, we will reveal them soon!
🤷♂️ ANY HINTS?
Well, one very pleasing thing is we have 5 graduates of our Ben Brown Academy on the list, all of them quality young men with a big future. The academy is for 14-16 year-olds so that step up to seniors happened quicker than I expected, but I'm genuinely delighted about it.
👶 SO LOTS OF BABY FACES?
Yep! We had 78 blokes take part in senior pre-season at some stage across the 14 weeks, a number of them talented 16-17 year-olds who are part of our Jimmy Webster Squad, and they created a lot of excitement for the older blokes.
🤔 HOW WAS THE PRE-SEASON?
Brutal, to be honest. The guys know the areas we need to improve and they went real hard at each other session after session. It was great to watch, but sometimes you had your heart in your mouth they were going that hard!
🤮 HOW HARD DID THEY WORK?
We had 32 football sessions, on top of the gym program. The blokes who did all 32 footy sessions covered just over 290km, all the while doing a lot of really taxing contested ball work in between! It was tough.
🏋️♂️ WHO RULED THE GYM THIS PRE-SEASON?
Our new High Performance guru Adam Richards is building a great strength program, and in the testing it's been Ben Kamaric and Callen Daly who have stood out from a power-to-weight perspective.
🏃♂️WHAT ABOUT FROM A RUNNING POINT OF VIEW?
Well Nathan Blowfield caused a boilover when he topped Adam Roberts in the KGV Time Trial, but Robbo got him back in the Australia Day Run when he ran 4.5km in an impressive 15:45!
🏉 HOW ABOUT ON THE FIELD?
Lots have impressed, but three guys have really stood out in terms of their workrate. Robbo, Aiden Grace and Joshua Whitford have consistently posted GPS numbers most VFL midfielders would be happy with, their workrate is insatiable.
🙋♂️ WHO ARE THE LEADERS?
Brayden Webb and Joshua Arnold are captains - a record-equalling 7th year for Pidge - Daniel Joseph is vice-captain and Gracey deputy vice-captain. Sam Rundle, Ben Kamaric, John Geard and Trad Dugganare also in the leadership group. It's a good group.
👨⚕️ HOW IS BRAYDEN & DANIEL'S REHAB GOING?
One of the few positives of the current situation is it's bought Pidge and DJ some more time, and we are now very hopeful they will play Round 1, whenever that might be.
🔮 WHEN MIGHT THAT BE?
Well I don't have a crystal ball, unfortunately, so I can't answer that one! Our guys have borrowed lots of equipment to stay fit, and I know plenty of them are having a real crack at the running sessions we're giving them, so I'm pretty hopeful we'll be ready to go whenever we get the call.
👨🔧 HOW ARE THE GUYS HOLDING UP?
Thankfully, most of them are still in work, which is a good thing about lots of our guys working in trades, fingers crossed. So while they're missing footy, they're doing ok.
🍇 HOW HAVE YOU BEEN KEEPING BUSY?
Our president, John McCann, did a great job of recognising quickly that local charities were going to need help, so I've been busy at the Food Bank and West Moonah Community House helping out and coordinating a bunch of volunteers from our club. It's been great to see a lot of people chipping in.
🙏 ANYTHING ELSE?
Just stay safe everyone, and hopefully we'll see you back at KGV before too long. In the meantime, if there is any way the club can help in difficult circumstances, please let us know.
