Athol attended Elizabeth Practising School before graduating to Friends Private School. He was selected in the Tasmanian School Boy Football team that played two games in Melbourne and whilst at Friends School he held the 440 yard sprint record. Athol made his way to senior football with New Town Football Club in 1924 as a 15 year old school boy.
His games with New Town included :
1924 4 games
1925 13 games and runner-up for the W. H. Gill Trophy ‘Best Player’ award
1926 15 games……1927 14 games
1928 15 games & represented the TFL V’s North Tasmania.
1929 16 games & represented the TFL V’s Collingwood, NSW in Sydney and then
North again followed by the NWFU.
1930 10 games & two games V’s North Tasmania.
1931 3 games, 1932 9 games, 1933 11 games, 1937 5 games and 1940 2 games.
Total New Town games : 117
In 1938 Athol was appointed Captain/Coach of Huon Football Association Club, Cygnet and led the club to a premiership. In 1939 he moved to Captain/Coach the Bridgewater Football Club that brought to a close the career of a wonderful player.
Athol also had an older brother, Harry who played for New Town 1n 1922 & 1923. |
