During the war years Doug joined the R.A. Navy on 21/01/1942 and was based at Flinders Naval Base.
He played football with Launceston Technical Old Boys in 1942 before moving to Victoria where he played two roster matches against VFL/AFL clubs North Melbourne & Footscray. Discharged from Naval service on 27/06/1946 Doug returned to Tasmania to played with Longford in the Northern Tasmanian Football Association in 1946.
He then moved to Hobart to play with New Town District Football club from 1947-1949. During this period he played in the Club’s 1948 Tasmanian Football League’s Premiership team and went on to win State premiership honours. Doug then returned to the NTFA this time joining Scottsdale Football club from 1950-1952. I953 he was appointed Captain/Coach of the Lillydale Football club in the East Tamar Football Association winning the Association’s premiership and the club’s ‘Best & Fairest’ award. He moved to the northwest coast, joining the Ulverstone Football club in the North West Football Union from 1954-1956. He was appointed Vice Captain when a member of the club’s 1955 Premiership and State premiership teams. The following season he was a member of the club’s 1956 Premiership side.
From 1956-1958 Doug was appointed Coach of Ulverstone’s Under/19’s team. He was one of only a few players to represent the TFL, NTFA & N.W.F.U associations in Intrastate matches. He also had a brother who played with both the Launceston and Scottsdale clubs in the NTFA. |
