League: Tasmanian State League Year: 2021 - First Semi Final Date: 28 August 2021 Ground: Invermay Park Glenorchy 8.4.52 lost to North Launceston 16.8.104
Game Notes:
For a little more than two quarters it looked as if the RSEA Magpies development team could produce an upset and advance to the Preliminary Final, but ultimately the depth of North Launceston prevailed.
The Bombers, who entered the first week of finals with a full list to choose from, started strongly at Invermay Park, and a late burst before quarter-time gave them a 26-point edge at the first break.
The Glenorchy boys weren't about to lie down, however, a stunning second quarter seeing them control territory throughout the term and boot 4 goals to 1 as Josh Whitford, Cooper Meredith, Jake Roberts and Braidy Simpson took control around the midfield, and Bayley Bester, Jude Saavedra and Matthew Joseph came to life up forward.
When Zac Evans-Fenton kicked truly after the half-time siren the margin was just 8 points and the game in the balance.
The third term was a tight affair early, but the Bombers converted their chances better to lead by 4 goals at the final break despite the likes of Dom Brown, Isaac Manson and Brodie Fewkes holding firm in the Magpie defence.
As the fourth quarter wore on time become the enemy for the visitors, North Launceston capitalising late to run out 52-point winners.
While it was a disappointing end, the season itself was a resounding success as Sam Hall's men turned a winless 2020 into a 9-9 return in 2021, where they stunned the Bombers during the home and away season and went within a point of toppling reigning premiers Launceston.
With 68 different players having tasted action in the development league team, a strong base was built for the future. |
